Skallingen Ved Høje Knolde Strand

Høje Knolde Strand is located on Skallingen, approximately 3 kilometres south of the town of Ho, within a protected nature reserve. The beach stretches approximately 4.6 kilometres to Hvidbjerg at Grønningen in the north and 7.7 kilometres to the southern tip of Skallingen. The beach and seabed are primarily composed of sand, with gravel and stones occasionally present. The beach width varies between 80 and 120 metres depending on tides.

Water

Sea water (North Sea/Vesterhavet). Salinity approximately 30 ‰. Water depth increases rapidly from the shore. Depth and current conditions are highly variable due to tides, currents, sediment deposits, and weather conditions.

Location

Approximately 3 kilometres south of the town of Ho on the Skallingen peninsula. Høje Knolde Strand is the southernmost bathing station along the west coast in Varde Kommune.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification based on testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria over four years. Annual classifications 2020–2023 all recorded as Excellent quality. No direct wastewater discharges or stream outlets affecting bathing water quality. Catchment area comprises natural habitats including dunes, heath, and salt marshes.

Risks

Dangerous rip currents can form between sandbanks (revels) running parallel to the coast. Water currents are predominantly northward in Vesterhavet but southward close to shore. Sea foam and water discoloration may occur due to algal blooms; bathing is not recommended under these conditions. Naturally occurring sea bacteria such as Vibrio and Shewanella can occur but typically not in large numbers at Vesterhavet. Algal accumulation on beaches may contain bacteria causing gastrointestinal illness. Dogs are prohibited on Skallingen to protect wildlife.
