Bredfjed is a child-friendly bathing beach in Denmark, located along Femern Strait in a scenic natural setting. The beach is 500 meters long and 15–25 meters wide, comprising fine sand with small stones at the water's edge. The beach is bordered by the historic Lolland Dike, which separates the beach from the hinterland and contributes to a pleasant atmosphere. Water quality at Bredfjed achieved Excellent classification in 2022 based on regular monitoring for fecal indicator bacteria during the bathing season.

Water

Femern Strait, classified as brackish water. Water depth increases gradually from the shore, remaining under 2 meters at a distance of 130 meters from the coast. Current direction is variable with no dominant flow direction.

Location

Bredfjed is located near Rødby and Rødbyhavn, approximately 5 kilometers away. Access to the beach is via Bredfjedvej, which leads to a parking area. Parking is available with associated toilet facilities.

Facilities

Toilet facilities, parking, trash bins along the dike and at the parking area, warning sign for reduced water quality, first aid kit, emergency telephone, disabled access facilities, lifeguard rescue ring, and Blue Flag.

Season

Bathing season monitoring occurs during the official bathing season; classification is reviewed annually each May before the season begins.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2022: Excellent. Classification is based on routine monitoring for E. coli and enterococcus bacteria during the bathing season 2018–2021. Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins. Under normal circumstances, there is no health risk associated with bathing in the water.

Risks

Sandholm Stream outlet located 500 meters southeast of the beach carries risk of elevated fecal bacteria concentrations during certain periods; bathing near this outlet is discouraged. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms is low but present, particularly during sustained warm periods with nutrient-rich water. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) wash-up at the water's edge. Potential for transient pollution from overflow structures upstream in Sandholm Stream during heavy rainfall. Glass shards and litter may occur on the beach. Risk of chemical pollution such as oil spills is very low.
