Holeby Østersøbad

Holeby Østersøbad is a long and broad family-friendly beach 200–300 metres in length and 20–30 metres wide, consisting of fine sand with a gently sloping sandy seabed. The beach is located along Femern Belt in green and natural surroundings in front of the Lolland Dike, approximately 5 kilometres from Rødbyhavn. Stone breakwaters are positioned at approximately 80-metre intervals along the beach, and a large green area with good sunbathing and play facilities is available inland from the shore.

Water

Femern Belt, a brackish water body. Water depth increases gradually from the shore, remaining under 2 metres at a distance of 80–150 metres from the coast. Current direction is variable, flowing primarily from the west.

Location

The beach is located approximately 5 kilometres from Rødbyhavn along Femern Belt in a holiday home area. Access is via Hyldtofte Strandvej, which terminates at a car park close to the beach.

Facilities

Toilet facilities, disabled access facilities, car park, first aid kit, emergency telephone, information board, rescue ring, blue flag, waste bins, and a pathway suitable for wheelchair users and prams leading to the dike.

Season

Routine water quality monitoring occurs during the bathing season. Water quality classification is reviewed annually in May before the start of the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent for 2022, based on routine sampling during the bathing season 2018–2021. Monitoring tests analyse for two faecal indicator bacteria: E. coli and enterococci. The presence of these bacteria indicates faecal contamination. Under normal circumstances, there is no health risk associated with bathing.

Risks

Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms, typically occurring during prolonged warm periods with nutrient-rich water. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) washup at the water's edge. A stream 2.2 kilometres northwest discharges into Femern Belt via a pumping station and may contain high faecal bacteria concentrations during heavy rainfall. Rødbyhavn Treatment Plant 3.6 kilometres northwest has an emergency overflow system that activates if capacity is exceeded during heavy rainfall or technical failure; overflow events are rare in summer. Glass shards and litter may occur. Chemical pollution risk is very low.
