Bussola is a bathing water located in Sanremo, Liguria, featuring a predominantly pebbly beach with groynes arranged perpendicular to the shoreline. The area is situated in a strongly urbanised zone characterised as a tourist and residential estuary. The bathing water extends over 0.36 km and is classified as poor quality based on the 2020–2023 four-year evaluation.

Coastal water body in a mountainous, low-stability area (CWA3 classification). The bathing area extends 0.36 km along the coast.

Location

Sanremo, Imperia province, Liguria region. The beach is located in the eastern part of the town, near Capo Sant'Ampelio, with access from Lungomare Vittorio Emanuele II and the SS1 Aurelia state road.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2020–2023: Poor. Intensified monitoring frequency is in place for the 2024 season due to the poor classification. A sewage pipe located approximately 170 m to the east of the monitoring point transits through the bathing water for about 30 m before discharging approximately 1.3 km offshore.

Risks

A sewage pipe discharge within the bathing area. During heavy precipitation events, increased flow from torrents may transport sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have been recorded in the region; reference station data from Santo Stefano al Mare (2019–2023) showed values between 10,000–30,000 cells/l in August 2019 and July 2022, below the 30,000 cells/l limit. Inhalation of aerosols from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory problems and fever in sensitive individuals.
