The Rio S. Bernardo mouth bathing water is located in Sanremo, Liguria, along the Italian Riviera coast. It is a predominantly pebbly beach with artificial structures built perpendicular to the shore. The area is strongly urbanized with private beach establishments, restaurants, and accommodation facilities. The beach is part of a scenic coastal area with the Riviera dei Fiori coastal park and the Aurelia state road (SS1) nearby.

Water

Coastal water at the mouth of the Rio S. Bernardo (T. San Bernardo) stream. The bathing area covers 0.163 square kilometers. The area is characterized by a touristic and residential setting with multiple beaches separated by groins.

Location

Sanremo, Imperia Province, Liguria region. The bathing water is located at the mouth of the Rio S. Bernardo stream. A sewage pipe runs approximately 300 meters east of the monitoring point and discharges about 1.3 kilometers away from the beach, outside the bathing water boundary.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for the four-year period 2021–2024: Poor (Scarso). Intensified monitoring is conducted during the 2025 season due to the poor classification. The Ligurian Sea is characterized by oligotrophic conditions with no cyanobacterial blooms. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has been observed in Liguria over the past decade; the bathing water is within monitoring area 2 of the regional Ostreopsis control network. The reference station at Santo Stefano al Mare has not exceeded the 30,000 cells/liter threshold since 2020; a value between 10,000–30,000 cells/liter was recorded in July 2022.

Risks

A strongly urbanized context with a sewage pipe located east of the sampling station that discharges outside the bathing water boundary. Heavy rainfall and upstream critical conditions can cause increased stream flow, potentially transporting sewage downstream. The Rio S. Bernardo mouth discharges directly into the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal blooms can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract effects and febrile states in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
