Campeggio Haway

Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Campeggio Haway is a grassy lakeside bathing area on Lake Viverone with a small pebbly beach and wooden landing. The seabed is sandy with a gentle slope and medium-sized stones. The area is situated before a wetland marsh zone and is surrounded by natural vegetation. The campground features equipped facilities including a bar and hygiene services.

Location

Viverone, Province of Biella, Piedmont region. The bathing area extends 0.189 km² at an altitude of 230 metres above sea level. Parking is available at the campground.

Water Quality

Classification: EXCELLENT. Based on 18 routine samples from 2020–2023. Escherichia coli (90th percentile: 5.1 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile: 7.1 MPN/100 ml). Enterococci (90th percentile: 15.1 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile: 22.8 MPN/100 ml). The bathing water falls within the homogeneous zone Viverone 2 with a medium-low impact indicator caused by grade III sewerage. A circumlacual collector terminating at a treatment plant in Azeglio is currently being refurbished; possible faecal contamination has been attributed to suboptimal collection system operation.

Risks

The bathing water is at risk of cyanobacterial proliferation due to strong eutrophication of the lake. In the past four years, 9 cyanobacterial samples were analysed, with 1 showing a density of 20,000 cells/ml or greater. Possible phytoplankton proliferation. The zone is subject to consistent blooms of aquatic macrophytes (Ceratophyllum demersum, Myriophyllum spicatum). Stormwater drainage within the bathing zone may influence water quality. Vessel discharges of mineral oils and fuel are possible.
