Camping Gabbiano is a bathing beach located in Fano, Marche, Italy. The beach features fine quartz-feldspathic and calcareous-siliceous sand with a moderate slope of 1–3% on both emerged and submerged sections. The beach is protected by artificial emerged breakwaters. The surrounding area is densely urbanized with a railway line passing through.

Water

Coastal water body. Average beach width: 44 metres. Distance between average-low and high water (safe water limit): 80 metres. Astronomical tide range: 30–50 centimetres. Area: 0.32528 hectares. Hydrographic basin: Coastline between Metauro and Cesano.

Location

Fano, Pesaro Urbino Province, Marche Region, Italy. The beach is adjacent to a camping area and a pedestrian zone. Parking for people with disabilities is available with accessible paths from the car park to the beach.

Facilities

Lifeguards and rescue service. Toilets. Disabled facilities including accessible parking, accessible pathways to the sea, and disabled sanitary facilities. Beach sports facilities: beach volleyball, basketball, and bocci. Children's play area. Refreshment point. Two concession areas and two free beach areas. Boat parking and launching corridor.

Water Quality

Classification: E (poor quality). Water body code: Fano_Senigallia. The area is characterized by combined sewer discharges. Three wastewater treatment plants serve the municipality, with the Ponte Sasso plant being the reference treatment facility for this coastal section (capacity 10,000–49,999 population equivalents). Both Ponte Metauro and Ponte Sasso plants comply with European Directive 91/271/CE standards. Control data shows all monitored parameters conform to legal limits.

Risks

Two combined sewer overflow outlets discharge to the sandy beach (outlets 47 Parco Giochi and 24-Imperial). Minor increase in microbiological parameters has been recorded. Non-toxic microalgae bloom (Noctiluca scintillans) was observed in the bathing seasons of 2008 and 2009, causing anomalous water coloration.
