Ponte Sasso is a bathing beach in Fano, Marche region, with fine quartz and feldspathic sand of calcareous origin. The beach has a moderate slope of 1–3% and is protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The average distance from water level to safe water limit is 80 metres. The beach is 50 metres wide on average and is located in an urbanized area with a railway line passing nearby.

Water Quality

Water quality classification E. The reference treatment plant is Ponte Sasso (serving 10,000–49,999 population equivalents), operated by ASET. The facility receives 1,000–1,500 cubic metres per day of wastewater in winter and 3,000–4,000 cubic metres per day in summer. Monthly monitoring conducted with 12 checks per year of Table 1 parameters and 6 checks per year of Table 3 parameters under Italian legislative decree 152/2006, all compliant with legal limits. Both Ponte Metauro and Ponte Sasso treatment plants conform to Directive 91/271/CE standards. The sewerage network covers approximately 260 kilometres across the urbanized municipal territory, with only isolated rural buildings not yet connected to public sewerage. Mixed-type collectors convey wastewater to three activated sludge treatment plants. During intense rainfall, wastewater flow rates increase significantly, triggering overflow discharge structures; 10 overflow discharges affect the Ponte Sasso coastal area.

Risks

Non-toxic microalgae bloom (Noctiluca scintillans) occurred in bathing seasons 2008 and 2009, causing anomalous discoloration of marine water. During intense rainfall events, wastewater overflow discharges are possible through multiple overflow structures.
