Hotel Imperial is a bathing beach in Fano with fine quartz-feldspar and limestone-flint sand. The beach has a gentle slope of 1-3% in both emerged and submerged areas and is protected by artificial rocky cliffs. The distance between average low water and high water (safe water limit) is 80 meters. Astronomical tidal range is 30-50 centimeters. The beach is surrounded by urban settlements with a railway line passing through the area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (poor). The sewerage network of Fano municipality is approximately 260 kilometers long and serves the entire urbanized area. Three active sludge treatment plants serve the area: Ponte Metauro (treating approximately 12,000 cubic meters daily), Bellocchi (approximately 2,000 cubic meters daily), and Ponte Sasso (1,000-1,500 cubic meters in winter; 3,000-4,000 cubic meters in summer). The Ponte Sasso treatment plant serves this bathing area and serves 10,000-49,999 population equivalents. Heavy rainfall causes combined sewage discharges through 17 overflow points in the coastal area (7 from Ponte Metauro, 10 from Ponte Sasso, 0 from Bellocchi). One overflow discharge (Caravelle) is authorized to discharge onto the sandy beach. Monitoring shows mild increases in microbiological parameters during short-term pollution events.

Risks

Non-toxic microalgae blooms (Noctiluca scintillans) occurred in 2008 and 2009 causing discoloration of marine water. Slight increase in microbiological parameters during short-term pollution events. Combined sewage overflow discharge authorized during heavy rainfall.
