The beach features fine sand of quartz, feldspar, and calcareous composition with a medium slope of 1–3%. The beach is protected by artificial emerging reefs, with an average distance of 80 metres to the waterline at safe water limits. The surrounding area is densely urbanized with a railway line passing through.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E. The coastal tract is served by the Ponte Sasso treatment plant (serving 10,000–49,999 population equivalents), operated by ASET. The treatment plant complies with Directive 91/271/CE standards. Monthly controls of microbiological and physicochemical parameters have all been compliant with legal limits over the past four years. One combined sewer overflow discharges from a 400 mm diameter pipe at the beach.

Risks

Light increases in microbiological parameters during rainfall events due to combined sewer overflows from Ponte Sasso treatment plant (10 overflow structures). Non-toxic microalgae bloom (Noctiluca scintillans) occurred in 2008 and 2009, causing unusual water discoloration.
