Dinestrup Strand

Dinestrup Strand is a bathing beach located approximately 12 km north of Nyborg, facing north-northeast toward the Great Belt (Storebælt). The beach stretches about 5.5 km and is characterized by varying sand types interspersed with larger stones, with narrow beach width of 20–25 m and a steep slope toward the water. The primary bathing area is at the sampling point where public access and beach conditions are optimal. Water depths exceed 2 m after approximately 125 m from shore.

Water

The Great Belt (Storebælt), a major shipping channel between Kattegat and the Baltic Sea. Water salinity measured at 16 ‰ on 15 July 2010. Current direction is primarily north or south, driven by tidal action and wind conditions. Fine sand bottom with scattered stones at Dinestrup Strand; northern areas contain larger stones covered with algae and seaweed.

Location

Located approximately 12 km north of Nyborg, Denmark, facing the Great Belt. The beach extends from 400 m south of the Kerteminde Municipality border to 400 m north of the Lysemose outlet. Public access is best at the primary bathing area marked by the sampling point (blue marker).

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent. Classification based on microbiological bathing water data from bathing seasons 2008–2011. No elevated E. coli values exceeding health risk thresholds have been measured in the past 5 years. The treatment plant at Mullerup is a major point source discharging treated wastewater with E. coli and Enterococci at approximately 1 million per 100 ml.

Risks

Potential fecal pollution from wastewater treatment plant discharges (permanent), stormwater overflows during heavy rain (2 minutes to several hours), large-scale agricultural manure storage accidents (unknown frequency and duration), and wild animal excrement from nearby habitat areas during heavy rain and specific wind conditions from the north-northwest. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) growth is low with no observations in the past 5 years. Macroalgae (seaweed) accumulates in large quantities annually in the northern part north of Risinge Head; smaller quantities occur at the primary bathing area. Bathing is generally discouraged at and within 200 m of stream outlets.
