Nordstranden is a bathing beach located on the east side of Kerteminde, a town of 5,712 inhabitants on the Great Belt strait in Denmark. The beach is approximately 1,000 metres long, ranging from 30 metres wide at its northern end to 130 metres at the southern end. It consists of fine sand with scattered small stones, and the seabed is also fine sand. The beach has been classified as excellent water quality based on routine sampling of faecal indicator bacteria over the preceding four bathing seasons.

Water

Saltwater in the Great Belt. Water depth increases gradually, reaching approximately 1 metre at 175 metres from the shore. Current direction is variable but primarily from the southwest, measured 58 times between 2006 and 2010.

Location

Nordstranden is located centrally on the east side of the northern part of Kerteminde, facing Kerteminde Bay. A camping site is situated west of the northern end of the beach. Parking is available, and the beach is served by major facilities.

Facilities

Toilet facilities, kiosk, parking, rescue posts, lifeguard tower with lifeguard during part of the bathing season, and entertainment facilities.

Bathing season; routine sampling and monitoring conducted during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Classification is based on routine sampling of E. coli and enterococci bacteria over the four preceding bathing seasons. The beach is monitored within a defined bathing area by Kerteminde Municipality during the bathing season.

Risks

The Tårup Kanal stream enters the water north of the beach and carries risk of high faecal bacterial concentrations in periods; however, within the defined bathing area the stream has low influence on water quality. Sewage overflows from Kerteminde Fjord south of the beach may discharge under conditions of system overload but normally do not affect bathing water quality. Risk of blue-green algae blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Low risk of large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) washing ashore, though some occurs at the southern end near Kerteminde Marina. Occasional waste, broken glass, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
