Strandalléen 42 is a bathing beach located in the northern part of Nyborg, facing east directly towards the Great Belt strait. The beach stretches approximately 1.3 km and is characterized by varying sand types ranging from fine to coarse sand, interspersed with larger stones. The beach width is relatively narrow at 20–25 m with a steep slope towards the water. Water depths exceed 2 m after approximately 125 m from shore, with fine and firm sand bottom interspersed with scattered stones.

Water

Great Belt, the strait between Funen and Zealand. Salinity measured at 16 ‰ on 15 July 2010. Water depth exceeds 2 m after approximately 125 m from shore. Sandy bottom with scattered stones. Significant sand bars form and change from year to year. Current direction is primarily north or south, driven by tidal flow and wind conditions as the Great Belt functions as the main transport corridor for water masses between the Kattegat and the Baltic Sea.

Location

Strandalléen 42, northern part of Nyborg town, Denmark. The beach faces east towards the Great Belt strait. The primary bathing area is at the sampling point marked on the beach.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent based on microbiological bathing water data from bathing seasons 2008–2011. Risk of cyanobacteria bloom assessed as low with no observations within the past 5 years. Risk of phytoplankton and macroalgae growth assessed as low with no significant observations within the past 5 years.

Risks

Risk of bathing water contamination from combined sewer overflows during heavy rain and unfavourable wind and current conditions. Wastewater and rainwater from combined sewer areas are discharged directly to the Great Belt via overflow structures during heavy precipitation. Rainwater runoff from urban areas contains coliform bacteria and is discharged via outlets at Egemosevej, Teglskovvej, and Christianslund. Bathing is generally discouraged within 200 m of stream outlets and rain-related discharges. An electronic warning system monitors the overflow structure at Strandalléen and displays signs discouraging bathing when contamination occurs; warnings persist for 72 hours after the last overflow event.
