Prima Piattaforma is a fine sandy beach of quartz-feldspar and limestone-flint origin in Falconara Marittima, Ancona Province in the Marches region. The beach has a gentle 3% slope and is protected by artificial rocky reefs. The average distance between the water at medium-low and high tides (safe water limit) is 80 metres. The beach is 270 metres long and 70 metres wide, bordered by urban development with a railway line passing nearby.

Location

Falconara Marittima, Ancona Province, Marches region. The area is surrounded by urbanized settlements with railway passage.

Facilities

Public toilets and disabled access facilities. Bars, restaurants, and bathing establishments. Animals are not permitted.

Water Quality

Classification E. Wastewater treatment is provided by a biological treatment plant with anaerobic digestion (Vallechiara facility) serving approximately 70,000 inhabitants. Monthly monitoring controls were conducted in 2010 by ARPAM on Escherichia coli with results compliant with authorized limits. In 2009, a non-toxic algal bloom of Fibrocapsa japonica occurred throughout August, causing reddish-brown discoloration and oily water consistency.

Risks

Combined sewer system overflow discharges directly to the sea during exceptional rainfall events through multiple outlets along the beach. Anomalous event: in July 2007, an oil spill from the API Refinery caused temporary closure of the bathing area for 10 days until 4 August 2007.
