Seconda Piattaforma is a bathing beach in Falconara Marittima with fine quartz-feldspar and calcareous sand at a 3% average slope. The beach is protected by emerged and artificial reefs. The water depth from medium-low to high tide (safe water limits) is approximately 80 metres. The beach is 250 metres long and 60 metres wide, surrounded by urban settlements with a railway line passing through the area.

Coastal bathing area on the litorale between Esino and Musone. Beach dimensions: 250 metres long, 60 metres wide. Water depth at medium-low to high tide (safe water limits): approximately 80 metres. Astronomical tide range: 30–50 centimetres. Seabed composed of fine quartz-feldspar and calcareous sand with 3% average slope.

Water Quality

Classification: Category E. The Vallechiara treatment plant serves approximately 70,000 inhabitants from urban settlements and approximately 3,500 equivalent inhabitants from productive activities. The plant has a potential capacity of 85,000 equivalent inhabitants. 2010 monthly monitoring by ARPAM of Escherichia coli at the treatment plant showed: March–May and October–November below detection limit; June 50 CFU/100ml; July 5 CFU/100ml; August 10 CFU/100ml; September 3,000 CFU/100ml; December 260 CFU/100ml. All results were compliant with authorized limits.

Risks

Natural clear water collector plus combined sewer overflow discharging black water into the sea via concrete pipe. In July 2007, an oil spill from the API refinery tank at the pontile resulted in precautionary closure of the bathing area from 25 July 2007 to 4 August 2007. In August 2009, massive proliferation of the non-toxic alga Fibrocapsa japonica caused reddish-brown discoloration and oily consistency of the water. Animals are not permitted.
