Primo Cavalcavia is a fine sandy beach in Falconara Marittima, Ancona, with quartz-feldspar and limestone-flint origin sand. The beach has a gentle 3% slope and is protected by artificial emerged breakwaters. The distance from medium-low to high water (safe water limit) is 80 metres. The beach measures 250 metres long and 20 metres wide. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements with a railway line passing through.

Coastal bathing water (Senigallia_Ancona water body) with astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimetres. Area extent: 0.42676. The water body is the Adriatic Sea.

Water Quality

Classification history: 2015 Excellent (E. coli 95th percentile 82.8, intestinal enterococci 44.7); 2016 Excellent (E. coli 164.0, enterococci 74.2); 2017 Good (E. coli 257.8, enterococci 70.3); 2018 Good (E. coli 323.1, enterococci 90.1). The Vallechiara wastewater treatment plant (BNR biological with anaerobic digestion) serves approximately 70,000 inhabitants from Falconara, Montemarciano, Monte San Vito, Camerata, Picena, Chiaravalle, and northern Ancona. The plant discharges via the Rigatta ditch directly to sea through the API Refinery. The sewer system is mixed-type and covers all urban areas; isolated and rural buildings are not yet connected.

Risks

Overflow discharges of mixed and blackwater from sewer overflow systems reach the sea through multiple outlets along the beach during exceptional rainfall events. Sversamento di acque miste da sfioratori fognari (discharge of mixed waters from sewer overflows) occurs. Anomalous pollution: spills of wastewater from livestock and biogas facilities near Jesi in the Esino River, resulting in precautionary closure of bathing at points near the Esino River mouth. Non-toxic microalgae Fibrocapsa japonica blooms in July and August. Non-stinging jellyfish Cotylorhiza tubercolata (pelagic) and stinging jellyfish Charybdea are present.
