Casello Ferroviario N.196 is a bathing beach in Falconara Marittima, Ancona province, in the Marche region. The beach features fine quartz-feldspathic and limestone-flint sand with a 3% average slope, protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The beach extends 630 metres in length and 50 metres in width. The surrounding area is characterised by urban settlements with a railway line passing through.

Water Quality

Classification: Category E (poor quality). Water quality monitoring conducted monthly in 2010 by ARPAM on Escherichia coli at the treatment plant outfall. Results ranged from below detection limit to 3000 CFU/100 ml in September 2010. Wastewater treatment plant at Vallechiara operates with BNR biological treatment and anaerobic digestion, serving approximately 70,000 population equivalents from urban areas and 3,500 from industrial activities. Overflow discharges occur through multiple outlets to the beach when sewage threshold is exceeded.

Risks

Combined sewer overflow outlets discharge to the beach during heavy rainfall events. A major pollution incident occurred on 25 July 2007 when an oil spill from an API refinery tank was discharged to sea, leading to temporary beach closure until 4 August 2007. In 2009, massive proliferation of the non-toxic alga Fibrocapsa japonica occurred throughout August, causing reddish-brown discoloration and oily water consistency.
