Secondo Cavalcavia is a fine quartz-feldspar and calcareous sandy beach in Falconara Marittima, Ancona, with a 3% average slope. The beach is 400 metres long and 60 metres wide, protected by artificial emerged breakwaters. The beach extends approximately 80 metres from medium-low to high water level. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements with a railway line passing nearby. Tidal range is 30–50 centimetres.

Public toilets and disabled-accessible toilets. Bar, restaurants, and bathing establishments. Animals not permitted.

Water Quality

2015: Excellent classification; 95th percentile E. coli 72.1 CFU/100 ml, intestinal enterococci 39.4 CFU/100 ml. 2016: Excellent; 95th percentile E. coli 133.1, intestinal enterococci 59.5. 2017: Excellent; 95th percentile E. coli 209.1, intestinal enterococci 48.1. 2018: Good; 95th percentile E. coli 338.9, intestinal enterococci 66.1. Wastewater treatment by Vallechiara treatment plant (biological BNR process with anaerobic digestion) serving approximately 70,000 inhabitants from urban settlements and 3,500 inhabitants equivalent from industrial activities. Monthly controls by ARPAM in 2010 at the treatment plant were consistently compliant with authorised limits.

Risks

Short-duration pollution events: discharge of mixed wastewater from sewer overflows. Sewer overflow outlet discharges beyond the artificial breakwater via a concrete pipeline. Non-toxic microalgal bloom (Fibrocapsa japonica) in July and August. Non-stinging pelagic jellyfish (Cotylorhiza tubercolata) and stinging jellyfish (Charybdea).
