Frederiksdal Fribad

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Frederiksdal Fribad is a bathing beach located at the south-eastern end of Furesø lake near Virum. The beach extends approximately 220 metres and features a sandy area around the bathing pier, with the remainder being a large mowed grass area. The beach is shallow and child-friendly, with approximately 50 metres distance from the shore to 2 metres water depth. The water has been classified as excellent quality, the highest classification possible under Danish bathing water regulations.

Water

Furesø lake, a freshwater lake with an area of 941 hectares and maximum depth of 38 metres. The water temperature varies between 10°C and 22°C during the bathing season. The lake bed consists primarily of sand, with some areas containing larger stones and smaller gravel sections.

Location

Located at Virum Vandvej 7, 2800 Kgs. Lyngby, near Virum. Parking is available along Virum Vandvej and at 4–5 spaces on Frederiksdalsvej, though parking restrictions apply in several locations on Virum Vandvej.

Facilities

Bathing pier (installed in summer), rescue station, toilets and disabled toilet facilities, tables and benches, waste bins, large grass area with views over Furesø, kiosk, restaurant, fire pits, canoe and boat rental at the sluice, Blue Flag information board, first aid equipment, and sorted waste collection containers.

Monitoring conducted during bathing season. Water temperature ranges from 10°C to 22°C during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent, assessed over four bathing seasons. Bacterial levels are normally low and stable. Risk of faecal pollution is low due to upgraded overflow basins and wastewater treatment. Blue-green algae blooms are rare due to oxygen injection of the lake bed since 2003. Other microalgae risks are low, as are risks from aquatic plants and low-oxygen conditions.

Risks

Possible occurrences of blue-green algae in warm summers, though risk of severe blooms degrading water quality is low. Faecal pollution risk from combined sewer overflows is minimal following 2010 basin expansion. Risk from aquatic plants, oxygen depletion, and pollen accumulation is low. Dogs are prohibited on the beach.
