Høje Klint is a bathing beach on Furesøen, a freshwater lake located south of Skovbakken in Farum, Denmark. The beach has a grass surface approximately 12 metres long with a sloping bottom that flattens toward the water. Water depth is less than 0.5 metres within the first 5 to 10 metres. The beach is situated in an area of scattered woodland, grassland, and low-density housing with gardens.

Water

Furesøen is a freshwater lake (not salt water). The lake bottom near Høje Klint consists of sand with occasional small stones. Water depth is less than 0.5 metres within the first 5 to 10 metres from the shore. No strong underwater currents are expected at this location. Rooted aquatic plants are present but distributed sparsely at Høje Klint.

Location

The beach is located south of Skovbakken in Farum, Furesø Municipality, Denmark. Access is available via a public path at Skovbakken number 78. Parking is available along roads in the residential area north of the beach.

Facilities

A rescue post is present at the beach. A waste bin and a table with bench are available.

Season

The official bathing season is approximately 1 June to 1 September. Water quality is monitored at least 10 times during this period, exceeding the bathing water directive minimum requirement of 4 times per season.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as excellent quality. This classification has been consistent for the past 10 years (2011–2020). Water quality is determined by concentrations of E. coli bacteria or enterococci. The Stavnsholt treatment plant outlet is located approximately 300 metres east of the beach. During heavy rainfall, overflow water containing diluted wastewater is discharged through this outlet. A separate stormwater outlet is located approximately 900 metres west of the beach. An overflow structure outlet from Rudersdal Municipality is located approximately 1,500 metres east of the beach.

Risks

Heavy rainfall can cause temporary water pollution from the treatment plant overflow, typically lasting no more than three days. Specific wind conditions may also cause pollution. Blue-green algae blooms have historically occurred, particularly in warm, calm periods from late June to early August, though recent years show declining growth. The lake may contain the parasitic flatworm that causes cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch), with reported cases of symptoms following bathing. The bacterium Aeromonas veronii occurs naturally in the lake at levels typical of clean lakes; the local health authority determined in 2009 that this does not constitute elevated infection risk. Persons with open wounds are advised against bathing during midsummer when bacterial levels are highest. Large accumulations of detached water plants (particularly the invasive species water pest) may occur at the shore and can promote bacterial growth. Cercariae (microscopic larval stages of parasitic flatworms) are present; infection causes skin irritation and inflammation lasting from days to several weeks.
