Nordlige Søndersø

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Nordlige Søndersø comprises two bathing beaches in Værløse, Denmark, located on a freshwater lake. The western beach is situated south of Søndersø Park and the eastern beach southeast of Søndergårdsvej. Both beaches feature grass and scattered trees along the shoreline, with sandy bottoms containing smaller and larger stones. The water has been classified as excellent quality for the past decade.

Water

Freshwater lake. Western beach length 7 metres, eastern beach length 10 metres. Beach width 5 metres each. Water depth less than 0.5 metres within the first 5–10 metres. Bottom consists of sand with smaller and larger stones and reed plants near the shore. No strong underwater currents are expected.

Location

Værløse, Denmark. The western beach is accessed via a public path at Søndersø Park no. 23, and the eastern beach via a public path at Søndergårdsvej no. 71. Approximately 12 parking spaces are available at Søndersø Park, with additional parking along roads in the residential area north of the beaches.

Facilities

Bathing bridge, lifeguard post, waste bins, and benches are located near the beaches. Signage indicates both beaches.

Season

Approximately June 1 to September 1.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent. Monitoring results from 2011–2020 show excellent classification in all years except 2011 (good). Water quality is determined by E. coli bacteria and enterococci content. Monitoring conducted at least 10 times during the bathing season (approximately June 1 to September 1). Risks

Heavy rainfall can cause short-term pollution from stormwater runoff (drainage from residential area approximately 85 metres east of western beach and 190 metres west of eastern beach). Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) can occur and produce toxins causing headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea in high concentrations; risk of algal blooms is normally low but can vary along the shoreline depending on wind direction. Aeromonas veronii bacteria naturally occurs in the lake at levels typical of clean lakes; persons with open wounds are advised not to swim during midsummer when bacterial levels are highest. Cercarial dermatitis (ikter) caused by parasitic flatworm larvae is known to occur in lakes; no cases have been reported in Søndersø.
