Foce Fiume Roja is a sandy beach located in the town centre of Ventimiglia in Liguria, Italy. The beach is situated at the mouth of the Roja River in a coastal area with strong hydrodynamics and freshwater inflow that causes significant temperature variations. The bathing water area extends 0.220 km and is characterized by an urbanized context with residential vocation. The beach is classified as Good quality for the 2019–2022 four-year evaluation period.

Coastal waters at the mouth of the Roja River. Area: 0.220 km. The water body is characterized by strong hydrodynamism with inflow of cold freshwater from the Roja, causing notable temperature variations.

Location

Ventimiglia, Liguria, Italy. The beach is in the town centre. Nearby infrastructure includes private beach establishments, accommodations, and restaurants. A pedestrian walkway connects the G. Oberdan promenade with public gardens Reggio on the left bank and the Marconi promenade on the right bank.

Water Quality

Classification for 2019–2022: Good. The Ligurian Sea is not characterized by cyanobacterial blooms due to predominantly oligotrophic conditions. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has been documented in Liguria over the past decade; monitoring at the reference station Tino in Mortola (Imperia) from 2018–2022 showed no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit and no values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre.

Risks

Emergency sewer outfalls located approximately 504 m west and 98 m east of the monitoring point discharge offshore. A tourist marina at Cala del Forte is located approximately 400 m west of the monitoring point. During heavy rainfall events upstream, increased water flow from tributaries may transport sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata can produce effects from aerosol inhalation causing temporary and reversible respiratory problems and occasional fever in sensitive individuals.
