Palestra is a sandy beach in Ventimiglia, Liguria, featuring two small sheltered coves protected by artificial barriers in the eastern section. The beach comprises both private beach establishments with facilities and free public beach areas. It is located in front of the town centre of Ventimiglia and is classified as excellent quality for bathing water.

Coastal waters of the Ligurian Sea. Bathing area extends 0.578 km. Water body classified as coastal waters with low stability (CWA3). The area faces the Rio S. Secondo basin.

Facilities

Private beach establishments with services, free public beach areas, reception structures, and food and beverage facilities. Oberdan and Cavallotti promenades and public gardens Reggio are located inland.

Water Quality

Four-year classification (2020–2023): Excellent. The Ligurian Sea is characterised by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has been documented along the Liguria coast for approximately one decade; the reference monitoring station at Tino in Mortola (Imperia) recorded no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit between 2019 and 2023.

Risks

Emergency sewage discharge pipes located west of the sampling station discharge approximately 173 and 120 metres from the shore. Increased flow rates in streams triggered by rainfall and upstream criticalities may transport sewage downstream. The Rio S. Secondo mouth opens directly onto the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata can produce respiratory irritation and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
