Foce Gromolo is a predominantly sandy beach located in Sestri Levante, Liguria. It features a vertical groyne structure at its western boundary and is classified as a coastal water body with mountainous features and low stability. The beach is free for public use and surrounded by tourist facilities and services. The area is situated in an urbanised residential zone characterised by numerous sandy-pebbly beaches.

Location

Sestri Levante, province of Genova, Liguria. The bathing area is accessible via the SS1 road. A promenade, cycling path, railway network, and parking are located inland from the beach.

Water Quality

Four-year classification (2019–2022): Good. The Ligurian Sea is characterised by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has been observed in the region over the past decade. The reference station at Chiavari recorded an exceedance of 30,000 cells/litre in July 2019; other seasons (2018, 2020, 2021, 2022) did not exceed 10,000 cells/litre.

Risks

The Portobello treatment plant outfall discharges approximately 1.1 km from the shore. A tourist marina is located approximately 480 m south-west of the monitoring station. The Gromolo stream mouth directly affects the bathing water. Heavy precipitation may cause increased stream discharge carrying effluent downstream. Ostreopsis ovata can produce respiratory effects and fever-like symptoms in susceptible individuals through aerosol inhalation.
