Piazza Italia is a predominantly sandy beach located in front of the coastal village of Sestri Levante in Liguria. The area is characterized by urban and tourist-residential infrastructure with numerous facilities including beach establishments, shops, and a seafront promenade. The bathing water was classified as Excellent for the four-year evaluation period 2018–2021. The beach extends over an area of 0.269 km².

Water Quality

Four-year classification (2018–2021): Excellent. Coastal wastewater treatment plant located approximately 600 m southeast with discharge outside the bathing water area. Tourist marina approximately 700 m to the east but outside the bathing water.

Risks

During heavy precipitation events, increased flow from torrents at the Gromolo stream (Foce T.Gromolo) located on the eastern boundary may transport effluent downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has occurred in Liguria over the past decade; a reference monitoring station at Chiavari recorded levels exceeding 30,000 cells/litre in July 2019, with lower levels in 2018–2020–2021. Inhalation of Ostreopsis ovata aerosol can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals.
