Fosso Arcobaleno is a beach in Mondolfo, Marche region, with fine quartz-feldspar and calcareous sand with an average slope of 3%. The beach is protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The average distance between water and high water mark is 80 metres. The surrounding area is characterised by urban settlements and a railway line passage.

Facilities

Lifeguards and first aid, toilets, disabled access ramps, cycle path, pavement, refreshment points along the seafront. Disabled facilities available in bathrooms. Animals not permitted.

Water Quality

Classification: E (poor). The outlet of Fosso Arcobaleno conveys rainwater into the bathing area. In Mondolfo's coastal strip between the A14 motorway and the sea, separate sewer collectors discharge approximately 2,500–3,000 cubic metres of wastewater to the Marotta treatment plant at the mouth of the Cesano River. Parts of the inland area and historic centre discharge directly into natural ditches without treatment. The Marotta treatment plant has undergone 12 controls of Table 1 parameters and 3 controls of Table 3 parameters over the last 4 years, all conforming to legal limits.

Risks

Non-toxic microalgae blooms: Chaetoceros socialis and Fibrocapsa japonica have caused anomalous water discolouration. Chaetoceros socialis occurred in 2008, Fibrocapsa japonica in 2009. Barriers in water (connected buoys) and on beach (signage) have been installed as precautions.
