Marotta-Pensione Trieste is a bathing beach in Fano, Marche region, characterized by fine quartz-feldspar and limestone-flint sand with a gentle slope of 1–3%. The beach is protected by artificial emerged breakwaters, with an average width of 28 metres. The distance between medium-low water and the safe water boundary is 80 metres, with astronomical tides ranging from 30 to 50 centimetres. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements with a railway line passing through.

Coastal marine water body along the Fano-Senigallia coast between the Metauro and Cesano rivers. Beach area: 0.06972 hectares. Beach width: 28 metres average. Water distance at medium-low to high tide: 80 metres. Astronomical tide range: 30–50 centimetres.

Location

Fano, Marche region, Pesaro-Urbino Province, Italy. The beach includes one concessioned area and one free area. Disabled parking is available with accessible pathways from parking to beach and to the sea.

Water Quality

Classification E. The area is densely urbanized. Wastewater treatment is managed through three activated-sludge treatment plants: Ponte Metauro (12,000 cubic metres per day), Bellocchi (2,000 cubic metres per day), and Ponte Sasso (1,000–1,500 cubic metres per day in winter, 3,000–4,000 in summer). The reference treatment plant for this coastal section is Ponte Sasso (serving 10,000–49,999 population equivalents), managed by ASET, with 12 annual checks and 6 annual checks on statutory parameters, all conforming to legal limits. Both Ponte Metauro and Ponte Sasso treatment plants comply with Directive 91/271/CE standards. Discharge outlets identified: Ponte Metauro has 7 overflow structures; Ponte Sasso has 10 overflow structures; Bellocchi has 0. Slight increases in microbiological parameters have been observed, linked to overflow discharges.

Risks

Two mixed-water overflow outlets discharge near the shoreline on free sandy beach that becomes buried during summer. Microalgal bloom (non-toxic Noctiluca scintillans) occurred during bathing seasons 2008 and 2009, causing anomalous water discoloration. Heavy rainfall increases foul sewer system flows, triggering overflow discharges at multiple outlets.
