Fyns Badestrand

Fyns badestrand is a dynamic sandy beach located at Nyborg in central Store Bay between Funen and Zealand. The beach is approximately 90 meters wide at its widest point and features fine sand with small dune formations. The northern part has a protected salt marsh behind it. The beach has been one of Nyborg Municipality's five blue flag beaches for many years, recognized for good water quality, excellent facilities including disabled access, and strong environmental commitment. It is considered the municipality's best and most preferred bathing location.

Water

Store Bay, a strait between Funen and Zealand serving as the main shipping connection between Kattegat and the Baltic Sea. Water depth exceeds 2 meters after approximately 100 meters from shore. Salinity measured at 16 ‰ on July 15, 2010. Seabed characterized by fine and firm sand with several sandbanks that shift annually. Primary current direction is north or south due to Store Bay functioning as the main transport channel for water masses. Currents influenced by tides, wind conditions, and concrete pillars of the Store Bay Bridge.

Location

Located at Nyborg city by Store Bay. Good access from the connecting road with direct parking available. The beach extends from Storebæltsbadet in the north to 200 meters north of the rainwater basin outlet at the Store Bay Bridge.

Facilities

Lifeguard tower staffed with two lifeguards operates June–August. Blue flag beach with good facilities. Disabled access facilities available.

Water Quality

Water classified as Excellent based on microbiological bathing water data from bathing seasons 2008–2011. Monitoring stations located at the beach (station 170, reference M 6740). Identified pollution sources include wastewater overflows from combined sewer systems during heavy rain (approximately 3000 meters away), rainwater discharge from the Store Bay Bridge, and treated wastewater discharge from Nyborg Central Treatment Plant (620 meters offshore at 14 meters depth). Modern treatment plant discharges typically contain E. coli concentrations around 1 million cfu/100 ml, but dilution with seawater provides adequate water quality. Control measurements at monitoring points over eight years show no water quality deterioration.

Risks

Risk of brief microbiological contamination from wastewater overflows during heavy rain lasting 2 minutes to several hours. Risk of chemical pollution from traffic accidents on the heavily trafficked Store Bay Bridge involving liquid chemical transport, though heavy substances are partially retained by oil separators. Risk from rainwater discharge outlet near the beach containing coliform bacteria. Low risk of cyanobacteria blooms with no observations within the last five years. Low risk of phytoplankton with no significant occurrences in the last five years. Macroalgae accumulation can extend survival of fecal bacteria. Bathing is generally not recommended within 200 meters of stream outlets and rain-dependent discharge points.
