Sølyst Bypark is a bathing area located in Nyborg's inner fjord on the northeastern coast, immediately adjacent to former ferry terminals and Holmen. The bathing spot features a bathing bridge and access platforms with stairways from the old ferry terminals rather than a traditional sandy beach. The coastline is protected by large boulders and has a low erosion risk. The area is characterized as a mixing zone where freshwater meets saltwater.

Water

Nyborg inner fjord, a mixing zone where freshwater from Ladegårdsåen and saltwater meet. Water depths reach 5–10 m at the ferry terminals and 2–3 m within a few metres from the shoreline. The seabed is characterized by small to medium stones near the water's edge, transitioning to fine, firm sand at 4–5 m depth. Average salinity measured April to October 2018 was 18 ‰. Current conditions are usually still water, though northerly winds can reverse flow direction and raise water levels up to 1 m.

Water Quality

Classification status: not yet assigned (bathing station established February 2021; first classification expected 2024). Identified pollution sources include stormwater overflows from separate and combined sewage systems during heavy rainfall, emergency overflow from Nyborg treatment plant, seabird droppings, and leachate from contaminated sites in the catchment area. An online warning system monitors overflow events from four main overflow points.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria blooms (blue-green algae) from species Nodularia spumigena in late summer and autumn, typically transported from the Baltic Sea via the Great Belt. Risk is considered low for toxic species Anabaena and Aphanizomenon. Macro-algae (seaweed) accumulation can occur, prolonging survival of faecal bacteria. Stormwater overflows during heavy rainfall introduce diluted wastewater, creating short-term microbiological contamination risks with intestinal enterococci and E. coli.
