Storebæltsbadet is a dynamic sandy beach located at Nyborg in Denmark, characterized by fine sand and numerous groynes along its length. The beach extends from Strandhotellerne in the north to Fyns badestrand in the south and has been one of Nyborg Municipality's five blue flag beaches for many years, recognized for good bathing water quality, excellent facilities, and environmental commitment. The beach transitions to protected salt marsh at its southern end and is backed by residential, commercial, and industrial areas. Water depths exceed 2 meters approximately 100 meters from shore, with firm sandy bottom conditions and occasional medium-sized stones.

Water

Storebælt is the waterway between the islands of Funen and Zealand, serving as the main shipping route between Kattegat and the Baltic Sea. The bathing area is positioned in the central part of Storebælt. Water depth exceeds 2 meters after approximately 100 meters from shore. The seabed is characterized by fine, firm sand with occasional medium-sized stones. Salinity measured on 15 July 2010 was 16‰. Primary current direction is north or south, influenced by tidal conditions and wind patterns.

Location

Located at Nyborg in Denmark. The beach extends from Strandhotellerne in the north to Fyns badestrand in the south. Parking and access facilities are available at the bathing station adjacent to the beach.

Facilities

Bathing station with good parking and access facilities. Own bathing pier. Lifeguard presence. Association "Storebælts Venner" operates at the bathing station with activities including winter bathing. Blue flag beach designation.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as excellent based on microbiological data from bathing seasons 2008-2011. Rainwater runoff from the Storebælt Bridge rainwater basin and combined sewer overflows during heavy rain represent potential sources of bacterial contamination. Risk of cyanobacteria blooms is assessed as low with no observations in the past 5 years. Risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton growth is assessed as low with no significant observations in the past 5 years.

Risks

Pollution risk during heavy rainfall from combined sewer overflow discharge point approximately 900 m north of the beach, with unfavorable wind and current conditions increasing contamination risk. Risk of chemical contamination from traffic accidents on the Storebælt Bridge involving liquid chemical transport. Bathing is generally discouraged within and 200 meters of stream outlets and rain-dependent discharge points. Low risk of cyanobacteria blooms and macroalgae accumulation.
