Gilleleje Vest

Gilleleje Vest Strand is a sandy beach located west of Gilleleje Harbour. The beach is approximately 350 metres long and 20 metres wide. It holds the Blue Flag environmental certification. The adjacent grass area is a protected nature reserve with walking trails and benches. Water depth reaches 2 metres approximately 180 metres from the shore.

Water

Sandy beach in saltwater. Water salinity is approximately 2%. Sand bottom without fixed reef structure, with some scour holes. Dominant current direction is easterly; strong cross-currents can develop from westerly and northerly wind directions. Water depth 2 metres approximately 180 metres from shore.

Location

West of Gilleleje Harbour. Parking is located at the end of Fejlbergsvej. Additional parking areas are available west of Lergravssøen and east of Dronningmølle Camping.

Facilities

Lifeguards during bathing season and during school summer holidays 10:00–18:00. Rescue ring accessible throughout the bathing season. Toilets available, including accessible toilet at Alfavej. Garbage bins and garbage sorting. Year-round bathing platform. Disabled access facilities.

Season

Bathing water samples are taken during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is calculated from samples taken over the previous four years. Low risk of cyanobacteria growth in the area, although algae may drift in from the Øresund. Only slight growth of seaweed within 4 metres of the waterline. Potential pollution sources include Søborg Canal outflow (risk of sewage overflow during heavy rainfall for up to 2 days), Gilleleje Harbour activities, and stormwater discharge. The Søborg Canal drains an unsewered hinterland.

Risk of sewage overflow from Søborg Canal during heavy rainfall, with potential water contamination lasting up to 2 days. Diffuse pollution possible from harbour activities and stormwater outflow. Strong cross-currents can develop from westerly and northerly winds. Blue-green algae may drift in from Øresund.
