Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Langerhuse Strand is a 15-kilometre-long beach on the west coast of Denmark facing the North Sea, characterised by fine sand and occasional areas of small to medium-sized stones. The beach is 100 metres wide and backed by high dunes in the characteristic North Sea landscape with stone breakwaters along its length. The water is classified as saltwater with currents typically flowing from north or south.

Saltwater beach in the North Sea. The beach is 100 metres wide and 15 kilometres long. The seabed consists of fine sand. Water depth increases rapidly and varies due to tidal conditions and changes in current and weather patterns.

Location

Langerhuse Strand is located west of a small summer house area near Harboøre in Lemvig Municipality. Access is via Langerhusevej road.

Season

Monitoring occurs during the bathing season. Classification is revised annually in May before the bathing season begins.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. This classification is based on regular monitoring samples taken between 2020 and 2023, analysing for E. coli and Enterococci indicator bacteria. The classification meets all regulatory requirements and is revised annually before the bathing season.

Risks

Rapid and variable water depth increases due to tidal effects and changing currents and weather conditions. Rip currents are common and dangerous natural phenomena; swimmers are advised not to fight the current but to drift with it for a few metres before swimming sideways to shore. Low risk of cyanobacteria blooms and phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of large macroalgae accumulation. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur. Sudden contamination can occur from incidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks, and sewage lines.
