Glumsø Sø

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Glumsø Sø is a freshwater lake located in the southern part of Glumsø, surrounded by scenic natural landscapes and accessible walking paths. The bathing area is 14 metres long and marked with a blue line on the lake shore. The lake bottom consists of fine sand with marsh vegetation, and water depth increases gradually from the shoreline, making it attractive for families with children. The water has been classified as Good quality based on routine monitoring of faecal indicator bacteria conducted between 2017 and 2019.

Water

Freshwater lake. Average depth 1.3 metres. Maximum depth 2.1 metres. Lake bottom composed of fine sand with marsh vegetation. Shore consists of grass-covered earth.

Location

Glumsø, southern part of the town. Parking is available. A walking trail circles the lake, and there is a large green area leading to the lake.

Facilities

Waste bins positioned along the walking path around the lake. Parking available. Signage present including warning flags for poor water quality.

Season

Bathing season monitoring occurs annually, with classification revision in May before the season starts.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Good. Classification based on routine monitoring for faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) conducted during 2017–2019. Monitoring shows the classification meets quality standards. Annual revision of classification occurs in May before the bathing season starts.

Risks

A small stream discharges southwest of the beach and functions as a recipient for two overflow structures; bathing in and around this discharge is discouraged. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms during warm periods with nutrient-rich water, which can cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Low risk of macroalgae wash-up. Glass shards and litter can occur on the beach. Possible sudden pollution from boat spills, manure tanks, or sewage lines. Minimal risk of chemical pollution (such as oil contamination).
