Tystrup Sø

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Tystrup sø is a freshwater lake bathing area located in the northwestern part of the lake near Frederikskilde in a protected nature area. The beach features a 150-meter-long and 10-meter-wide strip of sand along the lakeshore, with a sandy bottom that gradually deepens. A bathing pier is installed at the beach with water depth of approximately 0.5 meters at its end. The surrounding area includes forests, with agricultural land and grazing areas in the hinterland.

Water

Tystrup sø is a freshwater lake. The sandy lakebed gradually deepens from the beach. Water movement direction depends on wind conditions but typically flows northward.

Location

The beach at Frederikskilde is located in the northwestern part of Tystrup sø. Access is via Skælskørvej, then turning left onto a 200-meter gravel road leading to a parking area. Two paths lead from the parking area down to the beach. A canoe campsite is located approximately 500 meters north of the beach.

Facilities

Tables and benches are available on a 20-meter-wide grass area. Barbecue sites are provided. An information board is installed to communicate bathing advisories and water quality information.

Season

Water samples are collected 20 times during the period from May to August. The bathing water classification is revised each winter before the bathing season starts on 1 June. Beach inspections are conducted every 14 days during each bathing season.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as Excellent quality based on data from 2016–2019. Isolated cases of fecal pollution have been registered, attributed to reed cutting upstream in the Susåen river, potentially from waterfowl in the cut reeds. Pollution from swimmers is not considered significant due to high water exchange. The risk of pollution from rainwater sewers in Lynge Eskilstrup is assessed as low, with no recorded correlation between detected pollution and heavy rainfall.

Risks

Algal blooms can occur at Tystrup sø but have not been documented for extended periods in recent years. Algal bloom risk is greatest after rainy periods followed by warm weather. Visibility depth in the water is regularly measured to indicate algae levels. The risk of swimmer's itch is assessed as low, with greatest risk during periods of strong sunlight. The risk of macroalgae is low.
