Guldborg is a sandy beach with some stones located on Guldborgsund in North Lolland, Denmark. The beach is approximately 400 meters long and 10 meters wide, with water depth under 2 meters for the first 70 meters from shore. The bathing water is classified as excellent according to Danish regulations, based on data from 2011–2014. Swimmers should be aware of the shipping channel under Guldborgsund Bridge and potential sudden pollution events from boat accidents, slurry tanks, and sewage lines.

Water

Brackish water body with water temperature ranging from 14–26 °C during the bathing season. Water currents are highly variable but predominantly flow southward (20% of measurements). Water depth is under 2 meters for approximately 70 meters from the shore.

Location

The beach is accessed via Guldborgvej from Lolland and Storstrømsvej from Falster. Public transport is available via bus lines 733 and 760E, though these do not operate in summer. Parking is available near the bridge. A small boat harbour and the town of Guldborg are located south of the beach.

Season

Official monitoring conducted from 1 May to 1 September, with a minimum of six water samples taken during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on 2011–2014 data. Minor short-term faecal contamination has been observed at the control station, indicating temporary periods of slightly reduced bathing water quality. Potential pollution sources include Guldborg Harbour and the treatment plant, which discharges treated wastewater via a sea outfall near the shipping channel.

Risks

Risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms, particularly during prolonged warm, sunny weather with easterly winds. Toxins produced by algae can cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation occurs occasionally in the shoreline, with associated faecal bacteria survival. Glass shards, litter, oil spills, and other chemical pollution can occasionally occur. Sudden contamination may result from boat accidents, slurry tank leaks, and sewage line failures.
