Havnsø Havnebad is a bathing area located at Havnsø harbour in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. The seabed consists mainly of sand with smaller reefs and occasional larger stones. The water is shallow, with depths reaching approximately 100 metres from the shore. The bathing area is newly established as of 2023 and has not yet received an official water quality classification.

Marine bathing water. The seabed consists mainly of sand with smaller reefs and occasional larger stones. Water is shallow, reaching approximately 100 metres from shore. Current direction is predominantly westward.

Location

The bathing area is located at Havnsø harbour in Kalundborg Municipality. Vehicle access to the beach is available at Havnsø harbour with parking facilities. Pedestrian access is available via the western pier.

Water Quality

The bathing water has not yet been classified as it is a new bathing point established in 2023. Classification is expected to be available in early 2024. Potential pollution sources include Havnsø town and harbour, the Havnsø wastewater treatment plant, and a summer house area. Short-term pollution is most often caused by heavy rainfall, which can result in treatment plant overflow, though this occurs very rarely. The treatment plant and harbour are assessed as presenting a minor pollution risk because the treatment plant discharges via a sea outfall and currents flow westward away from the beach.

Risks

Algal blooms (cyanobacteria) can occur and produce toxins causing headaches, skin irritations, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea upon contact. Children and immunocompromised individuals are particularly vulnerable. Animals may die if they drink contaminated water. Large quantities of seaweed (macroalgae) at the water's edge can promote bacterial growth and extend the survival of faecal bacteria in the water. Drain outlets on the beach present a minor risk as the dominant current direction carries contamination away from the bathing area. Glass fragments, litter, and chemical pollution may occasionally occur.
