Havnsø Strand Vest is a sandy beach approximately 560 metres long and 15 metres wide located in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. The beach has few large stones and sparse vegetation. The seabed consists mainly of sand with minor reefs and occasional larger stones, with shallow water extending approximately 100 metres offshore. The beach is classified as Excellent based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2018-2021.

Water

Marine bathing water. Beach approximately 560 metres long and 15 metres wide. Seabed mainly sand with minor reefs and occasional larger stones. Shallow water extends approximately 100 metres offshore. Primary current direction is westward.

Location

Located in Kalundborg Municipality, accessible by car via Strandvej which runs along the beach. Parking is available where the road turns. The beach is also accessible on foot along its entire length. The nearest town is Havnsø, located in the hinterland.

Season

Monitoring occurs minimum 4 times per year. The classification section is revised annually in November following the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (based on intestinal enterococci and E. coli measurements 2018-2021). Short-term pollution most often results from heavy rainfall causing treatment plant overflow, which occurs very rarely. Drainage outlet discharge and discharges from the wastewater treatment plant Havnsø are assessed as minor risks due to the dominant westward current direction moving pollution away from the bathing area.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) can produce toxic substances causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea and diarrhoea on contact or water ingestion; children and immunocompromised individuals are particularly vulnerable. Large quantities of seaweed (macroalgae) at the water's edge can pose health risks and extend the survival of faecal bacteria in water. Heavy rainfall can occasionally cause treatment plant overflow. Glass, litter and chemical pollution may occasionally occur.
