Havnsø Strand Øst is a sandy beach approximately 560 metres long and 15 metres wide, located in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. The beach features two stone breakwaters near its midpoint and sporadic vegetation facing the wind. The seabed consists mainly of sand with minor reefs and occasional larger stones, with shallow water extending approximately 100 metres offshore. The beach has been classified as excellent based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2018–2021.

Water

Coastal sandy beach. The beach is approximately 560 metres long and 15 metres wide. The seabed consists mainly of sand with minor reefs and occasional larger stones. Shallow water extends approximately 100 metres offshore. The dominant current direction is westward, from southwest to due west.

Location

The beach is located in Kalundborg Municipality along Strandvej, which runs adjacent to the shore. Vehicle access is available via Strandvej, with parking available at Havnsø Strand Vest. Pedestrian access is available along the entire beach.

Water Quality

Excellent classification based on intestinal enterococci and E. coli measurements from 2018–2021. Short-term pollution typically results from heavy rainfall, which can cause overflow at the treatment plant, lasting a maximum of 3 days after rainfall ceases. The treatment plant discharges via a sea pipeline, and the westward current moves potential pollution away from the beach toward the harbour. Drain outlets are considered to pose minimal risk due to the dominant westward current direction.

Risks

Short-term pollution from heavy rainfall causing treatment plant overflow. Drain outlets present minor pollution risk. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and macroalgae (seaweed) present potential health risks, particularly to children and immunocompromised individuals. Large quantities of macroalgae can promote bacterial growth and extend survival of faecal bacteria in water.
