Vesterlyng syd is a sandy beach approximately 2,500 meters long and 20 meters wide, located in the municipality of Kalundborg, Denmark. The beach features small stones especially at the water's edge and is classified as Excellent based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2019-2022. The area is characterized by beach meadows grazed by cattle and horses, and the Karsemoseenden stream has its outlet in the middle of the beach.

Water

Sandy beach with smaller stones, approximately 2,500 meters long and 20 meters wide. Current direction varies between westerly and easterly.

Location

The beach is located at Vesterlyng in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. Access by vehicle is via Lyngvej, which ends at a parking area. A sign and toilet facility are located at the parking area. A rescue buoy is positioned on the beach. Multiple parking areas are available along Lyngvej between Vesterlyng north and Vesterlyng south, though not all are always open.

Season

Water quality monitoring occurs a minimum of four times per year. The classification section is revised annually in November after the bathing season.

Water quality classification is Excellent based on intestinal enterococci and E. coli measurements from 2019-2022. Water quality monitoring is conducted a minimum of four times per year. Sewage treatment improvements in rural areas are ongoing to positively affect drains and outlets.

Risks

Grazing cattle and horses are sources of fecal contamination. The Karsemoseenden stream outlet can cause pollution. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom is present; signs include foam formation at water's edge, water discoloration, and potentially dead animals. Large amounts of seaweed (macroalgae) at the beach edge can pose health risks and prolong survival of fecal bacteria. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution can occasionally occur.
