Helles Klint

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Helles Klint is a beach in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark, approximately 130 metres long and 5 metres wide. The beach is characterized by many small stones and occasional larger stones, with vegetation along the slope and tree planting along its entire length. An open area is used for boat mooring. The water extends beyond the rocky shoreline, with isolated sandy areas and a rescue ring located near the boats.

Location

Helles Klint is located in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. Access to the beach is via footpaths from the summer house area. There are no parking facilities.

Water Quality

Based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2018–2021, the beach is classified as EXCELLENT according to EU bathing water directive rules. Short-term pollution typically occurs after heavy rainfall, which can cause overflows at the treatment plant and in drains and watercourses, usually lasting no more than 3 days after rainfall stops. The risk from the treatment plant is assessed as minimal, as overflows at Ulstrup treatment plant are very rare.

Risks

Sources of faecal pollution include Ulstrup treatment plant. There is a risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, which can cause headaches, skin irritations, fever, nausea and diarrhoea in humans through contact or water ingestion, particularly affecting children and immunocompromised individuals. Large amounts of macroalgae (seaweed) can accumulate at the water's edge and pose health risks. Glass shards, litter and chemical pollution occasionally occur.
