Stubberup Havn

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Stubberup Strand is a narrow pebble beach with a small sandy area located on the southern coast of Lolland facing Lambo Farvandet. The beach is approximately 185 meters long and very narrow, with a sand bottom and water depth under 2 meters for the first 300 meters from the shore. The surrounding area consists of agricultural land, forest (Ålholm Hestehave), and scattered buildings.

Water

Brackish water. Water currents vary considerably but predominantly flow westward. Water temperature during bathing season ranges from 14–25 °C. Very shallow area with water depth under 2 meters for approximately 300 meters from the shore.

Location

The beach is located at the town of Stubberup near a harbour. Access is via Stubberupvej to the harbour where parking is available. No public transport serves the beach.

Season

Official monitoring period: 1 May to 1 September. During this season, at least 6 water quality samples are collected by the municipality.

Water Quality

Water is classified as excellent according to Bekendtgørelse nr. 939 of 18/09/2012, based on data from 2011–2014. Occasional short-term faecal contamination occurs, with sources potentially from Stubberup Harbour. Swimmers should be aware of sudden contamination from boat accidents, slurry tankers, and sewage pipes.

Risks

Risk of blue-green algae blooms (cyanobacteria) particularly during prolonged warm, sunny weather with easterly winds; algae can produce toxins causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Phytoplankton accumulation in shellfish possible, causing serious poisoning if consumed. General low risk of macroalgae washup; when present, bathing near accumulations is not recommended as they can harbour disease-causing bacteria. Glass shards, litter, oil spills, and chemical contamination can occasionally occur.
