Hov Nordstrand

Hov Nordstrand is a 1,500-meter-long beach on the northernmost point of Langeland, facing Storebælt. The beach consists primarily of fine sand with scattered small stones, with a belt of pebbles along the shoreline. The seabed is composed of fine sand with scattered stones. The beach is up to 25 meters wide and is surrounded by large green areas and varied nature that attract both nature lovers and bathers.

Water

Storebælt (Great Belt) waters classified as brackish water. Water depth rises gradually offshore; water depth is under 2 meters within 350 meters of the coast. Current direction is variable but primarily from the north.

Location

Hov Nordstrand is located on the northern tip of Langeland. Access to the beach is via Hov Plantage road at the eastern end and via Houvej road at the western end. A parking area is available at the western end via Houvej.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Meets quality standards. Classification is based on routine water samples analyzed for E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria collected regularly during the bathing season (1 June – 1 September). Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

The stream Øster Prisskov has its outlet 1.1 kilometers southeast of the beach and carries risk of high concentrations of fecal bacteria during certain periods; bathers are advised not to bathe in the stream outlet and to swim within the defined monitored beach area. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) wash-up at the water's edge. Glass shards, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. Sudden pollution from incidents such as pleasure boats, slurry tanks, or sewage lines is possible.
