Melsted is a sandy beach located south of Gudhjem on the island of Bornholm, Denmark. The beach stretches approximately 350 metres between Melsted Harbour and Melsted Bath Hotel. The sandy beach transitions relatively quickly to a rocky bottom, with water depth increasing slowly from the shore to 2 metres at approximately 100 metres from land. A small stream, Melsted Å, flows into the beach near its midpoint.

Location

Melsted, south of Gudhjem on Bornholm, Denmark. Access is via Melstedvej from Melsted By or Bækken. A small public car park and public toilets are located at the beach. A restaurant and agricultural museum are available in Melsted, with additional restaurants and shops in nearby Gudhjem.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'good' based on monitoring data from 2016–2019. Long-term monitoring data from the municipal control station indicates good water quality. The treated wastewater discharge from Melsted Treatment Plant, a modern biological and chemical treatment facility serving Gudhjem, Melsted, and Østerlars, is released through a 160-metre offshore pipeline at approximately 6 metres water depth north of Melsted Harbour.

Risks

Blue-green algal blooms (Nodoularia spumigena, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and others) occur naturally in the Baltic Sea around Bornholm during warm periods, typically July–August, and especially during calm, sunny weather. Algae can produce toxic substances and should not be ingested. Children and dogs are advised against bathing where algae concentrations are high. Periodic drift of seaweed and macroalgae onto the beach can cause odour and aesthetic issues.
