Brøndby Strand is a 2 km section of the 7 km Køge Bugt Strandpark, an artificially created nature and recreational area in the northern part of Køge Bugt that also provides protection against coastal flooding. The beach has a sand width of 8–35 meters, with sand in the waterline and smaller stones in some areas. Two bathing piers are available. The water is saltwater with low salinity, typically around 1%.

Water

Saltwater bay in Køge Bugt with saline content of approximately 1%. Sand and smaller stones present in the waterline at 0–3–4 m depth. Sandbottom with occasional stones at 3–4 m depth. Water depth typically exceeds 1 m at approximately 100 m from shore and 2 m at approximately 150 m from shore. Current direction in the upper part of Køge Bugt is highly variable and wind-dependent but rarely strong or dangerous for swimmers.

Location

Brøndby Strand is located in Brøndby Municipality between Vallensbæk Strand and Brøndby Havn. Access is provided via Strandporten, which leads to parking areas. Renseanlæg Avedøre (BIOFOS) treatment plant is located 1.5 km east of the beach.

Facilities

Two bathing piers. Lifeguards present at Strandparkens area who treat swimmers injured by glass shards.

Water Quality

Classified as 'Excellent quality' based on bathing water analyses from 2019–2022. Has maintained 'Excellent quality' classification for the past six years according to EU classification (Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor). Nutrient loading from wastewater treatment and agriculture creates conditions for cyanobacterial blooms, which typically occur only every 4–5 years and for brief periods.

Risks

Short-term pollution risk requiring avoidance of bathing for 1–2 days after heavy rainfall occurring 1–3 times annually. Risk of elevated faecal contamination during heavy precipitation from: Strandpark lakes receiving wastewater during overflows, Fæstningskanalen water, Store Vejle å overflows, and Renseanlæg Avedøre overflow in Brøndby Havn. Special current conditions may direct wastewater toward the beach. Cyanobacterial blooms possible under specific weather conditions, though rare at this location. Seaweed present at waterline but removed almost daily throughout bathing season. Glass shards and debris occasionally occur.
