Isola Palmaria Terrizzo is a sandy-pebbly beach located on the northwestern side of Palmaria Island in an inlet called Terrizzo. The area is bordered by a tourist harbor to the east where ferries and private boats dock. Inland, a hilly zone with Mediterranean vegetation and natural park trails is present. The beach is classified as Excellent based on water quality assessments from 2017–2020.

Water

Coastal waters covering an area of 0.907 km². The water body is classified as coastal waters with low stability in a mountainous relief setting.

Location

Portovenere, La Spezia Province, Liguria Region, Italy. The beach is situated on the northwest side of Palmaria Island between Punta Secco and the tourist harbor of the island. Access is available via the tourist harbor where ferries from Portovenere arrive.

Facilities

Military Navy bathing facilities, Gabbiano equipped beach, and Carlo Alberto beach are present.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2017–2020 is Excellent. Intestinal enterococci measured at 90th percentile: 3.5 UFC/100 ml and 95th percentile: 4.5 UFC/100 ml. Escherichia coli measured at 90th percentile: 17.4 MPN/100 ml and 95th percentile: 19.5 MPN/100 ml. A coastal wastewater treatment plant for Portovenere is located approximately 400 meters west of the sampling point with a sewer line passing entirely outside the bathing water area.

Risks

During heavy precipitation, increased stream flow from Fosso San Giovanni can transport effluents downstream. The tourist harbor at Punta Secco used by ferries from Portovenere is located within the bathing water area. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have been documented in the region over the past decade, though monitoring from 2017–2020 at the reference station PORT in Porto Venere recorded no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/liter threshold.
