Palmaria Terrizzo Est is a sandy-gravelly beach with rocky coastline located on the north-eastern aspect of Palmaria Island at the Terrizzo inlet. The beach is classified as excellent for bathing water quality based on 2020-2023 monitoring. A protected marine area with diving sites is present, and the historic military fortress Umberto I is located inland.

Water

Coastal Mediterranean water body with an area of 1.332 km². The beach alternates between sandy sections and high rocky coastline on the north-eastern part of Palmaria Island.

Location

Portovenere, La Spezia Province, Liguria Region. The beach is situated on Palmaria Island between the Terrizzo tourist harbour and Punta Scuola. A tourist harbour with a ferry connection to Cinque Terre is located at the western boundary.

Water Quality

Classification for 2020-2023 period: Excellent. The Ligurian Sea is characterised by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacteria blooms. Ostreopsis ovata monitoring station (PORT) at Porto Venere recorded no exceedances of 30,000 cells/litre between 2019 and 2023.

Risks

During heavy precipitation events, increased torrent flow rates may transport wastewater downstream via Fosso Canalone at the western boundary. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae species occurs in the region, potentially causing temporary and reversible respiratory effects and fever in sensitive individuals when inhaled as aerosol, though no exceedances were recorded at the reference station during 2019-2023.
