Kelstrup Strand

Kelstrup Strand is a small sandy beach with stones located on the open west-facing coast of Musholm Bay. The beach is 3 to 6 metres wide and approximately 100 metres long, with about 50 metres on each side of the bathing pier. The seabed to approximately 2 metres depth consists of sand with seaweed and stones, with ridge formations beginning 40 to 80 metres from the shore. Water quality at the beach is generally excellent based on analyses from preceding years.

Water

Saltwater body at Musholm Bay/Storebælt. The seabed extends 225 to 300 metres to reach 2 metres depth. Water depth at the beach is relatively shallow. The dominant current direction is from the west at 35 percent of measurements taken between 2012 and 2015.

Location

Kelstrup Strand is located near Kongsmarksvej 259, 4200 Slagelse, approximately 2 kilometres southwest of the village of Kelstrup. Access is via Kongsmarksvej. Parking is available approximately 250 metres north of the beach on Kongsmarksvej.

Facilities

Bathing pier, information board, open recreational area with grass and sports field, rescue station, picnic tables and benches.

Water Quality

Bathing water quality is classified as excellent based on analyses from preceding years. Water quality classification is revised if status changes. Monitoring is conducted 6 times per year.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria blooms is low but possible during prolonged warm periods with nutrients present. Seaweed is regularly washed ashore but normally swept out again within days. Glass shards, litter, and chemical contamination including oil spills can occasionally occur. Fecal pollution sources include Almind Rende stream approximately 250 metres north, which carries field drainage and potentially untreated wastewater from rural properties. Following heavy rainfall, bathing is not recommended for 3 days.
