Klitmøller

Klitmøller Strand is a bathing beach located on the North Sea coast between Hanstholm and Nørre Vorupør, approximately 16 km northwest of Thisted. The beach is up to 100 m wide and approximately 2 km long, composed primarily of coarse sand. The water is clear and shallow at the edge but deepens rapidly, and currents can be strong at times. The beach is associated with the town of Klitmøller and is surrounded by dune and heath landscapes, offering good conditions for fishing and surfing.

Water

North Sea bathing water. The beach is up to 100 m wide and approximately 2 km long, bounded by Nors Å in the north and the boat launch site at Ørhage in the south. Water depth reaches 2 m approximately 200 m from the shore. Salinity is 30–35 psu. Summer water temperature ranges from 7–21 degrees Celsius (May to August). General currents are northerly.

Location

Located on the North Sea coast between Hanstholm and Nørre Vorupør, approximately 16 km northwest of Thisted. Access is via route 181 (Kystvejen) from Hanstholm, turning right towards Klitmøller Strand on Ørhagevej and following it for approximately 2.5 km. Parking is available approximately 40 m from the water's edge.

Toilets, bus stop, parking spaces, waste bins, kiosk/café/surf shop, information board, displayed coastal boat, rescue triangle/life ring.

Season

Monitoring occurs throughout the bathing season. Summer water temperature period is May to August.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality, the highest bathing water quality classification. Classification is based on four years of bathing water analysis data. Non-cloaked areas in the catchment do not pose a risk for short-term faecal pollution. Rainwater system discharges do not pose a risk for short-term faecal pollution.

Risks

Foam algae (skumalger) can occur during periods of westerly winds; during severe blooms, the water turns brown and foul-smelling foam accumulates on beaches. Seaweed (macroalgae) can be torn loose during heavy weather and onshore winds, washing ashore and creating aesthetic problems and smell issues from decomposition.
