Nørre Vorupør Strand is a bathing beach located on the North Sea coast between Hanstholm and Agger in Denmark. The beach consists of coarse sand, is approximately 100 metres wide and 4 kilometres long, and is sheltered by high dunes. The adjacent Nørre Vorupør Havbad is an artificial swimming pool of approximately 3,500 square metres excavated into the beach with a connection to the sea. Both locations offer good conditions for fishing and surfing and are surrounded by protected heath and dune habitats.

Water

Open North Sea beach and artificial swimming pool. The beach is approximately 100 metres wide and 4 kilometres long with coarse sand substrate. Water is clear with sandy bottom. At the beach proper, depth increases rapidly to approximately 2 metres at 60 metres from the shoreline. The swimming pool (Havbadet) has varying water depth rarely exceeding 1.5 metres with a concrete-sand bottom. Salinity ranges from 30 to 35 psu. Summer water temperature from May to August ranges from 7 to 21 degrees Celsius.

Location

Located in Thisted Municipality on the west coast of Jutland, Denmark. Access via route 181 from Hanstholm, turning right towards Nørre Vorupør Strand on Hawblink road for approximately 2 kilometres. Approximately 130 metres from the car park to the water's edge. Nearest address: Vesterhavsgade 190, 7700 Thisted.

Season

May to August for water temperature monitoring. Bathing season control and analysis occurs throughout the season with continuous monitoring.

Risks

Foam algae (skumalger) may occur during periods of westerly winds, causing brown discolouration and foul-smelling foam on beaches. Microscopic algae may accumulate in the still water of the swimming pool, causing brown discolouration and slight oiliness on the sand bottom. Macroalgae (seaweed) may wash ashore during heavy weather and strong onshore winds, creating aesthetic problems and potentially causing oxygen depletion as it decomposes.
