Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Nors Sø is a bathing spot located between Klitmøller and Thisted in Denmark. The bathing area measures 100 by 60 metres and consists of grass bordered by vegetation on both sides. The water is clear with a fine sand bottom that is shallow near the shore before reaching depths of up to 20 metres. Water temperatures during the summer months range from 8 to 19 degrees Celsius. The site is classified as excellent quality, the highest bathing water classification available.

Water

Nors Sø is a nutrient-poor lake with a calcium-rich bottom. It has no tributaries and receives water supply through cracks in the limestone. Discharge flows westward through Nors Å to the North Sea. The water is clear with a fine sand bottom. Depth near the bathing area is shallow along the shore before reaching approximately 20 metres at distance. Weak currents may occur depending on wind conditions.

Location

Nors Sø is situated between Klitmøller and Thisted, approximately 5.5 kilometres east of Klitmøller, near Klitmøllervej (route 557). Access is via Agerholmvej towards Nors Sø, following a gravel road for approximately 300 metres to the car park. The water's edge is 120 metres from the car park.

Facilities

Toilets including disabled toilet, barbecue area with firewood, tables and benches, car park, waste bins. Bird observation tower located 500 metres away.

Season

Water quality is monitored throughout the bathing season. Algal conditions are monitored from April to October.

Water Quality

The bathing water at Nors Sø is classified as excellent, the highest water quality classification. This classification is based on bathing water analysis data from the preceding four years. Monitoring is carried out continuously throughout the bathing season.

Risks

Possible sources of contamination identified include non-sewered areas in the near catchment area, manure tanks and large-scale animal husbandry in the vicinity, and agricultural land in the catchment area. However, analysis results indicate these pose no significant risk to water quality. Algal blooms and cyanobacteria are theoretically possible but have not been observed in the area. The lake's nutrient-poor status minimises algal bloom risk.
